The American Society of TMJ Surgeons (ASTMJS)

The American Society of TMJ Surgeons (ASTMJS) is a non-profit organization of maxillofacial, orthopedic, plastic/reconstructive and oral surgeons dedicated to promoting education, research, and patient services pertaining to TMJ disorders. Membership in this organization is restricted to 50 qualified surgeons in the United States and the rest of the world. Members of this organization must possess significant surgical experience and an interest in performing research or clinical studies of TMJ disease or dysfunction.

The TMJ Association, Ltd. (TMJA)

The TMJ Association, Ltd. (TMJA) was founded as a non-profit organization in August 1986 by Terrie Cowley and Sandra Geilfuss, both sufferers of TMJ diseases. Their intent was to establish a support group to provide a forum for the exchange of experiences, information, understanding and emotional support for TMJ patients. The TMJA serves patients, professionals, and the general public through a variety of educational, social, and advocacy programs. Their mission is to improve the care and treatment of those affected by TMJ diseases/disorders through fostering research and education, with the ultimate aim of preventing these craniofacial problems. The Board of Directors of the TMJA has established an all volunteer Scientific Advisory Board, including conference Co-Chair Kyriacos Athanasiou and invited speakers Julie Glowacki and Stephen Milam.

The NIDCR’s TMJ Implant Registry and Repository (TIRR)

The NIDCR’s TMJ Implant Registry and Repository (TIRR),a $6 million project, with Dr. Jim Fricton as principal investigator, was started in 2002 as a database for thousands of patients from hundreds of clinicians in the U.S. and Canada. The goal of the TIRR is to collect clinical information and biological specimens from TMJ disorder patients who have had failed implants or who are considering implants, and to then make the contents of the database, the biological samples, and retrieved implants available to researchers. Dr. Fricton will deliver a presentation, entitled "The NIDCR’s TMJ Implant Registry and Repository: Improving the Outcomes of TMJ Implants."

Annals of Biomedical Engineering (ABME)

The Annals of Biomedical Engineering (ABME) is an interdisciplinary, international journal, and is the official journal of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), the premiere organization for bioengineers. The journal publishes original articles in the major fields of bioengineering, in addition to technical reports, special communications, rapid communications, history and teaching articles, book reviews, and letters to the Editor. As approved by the Editor-in-Chief of ABME, Dr. Larry McIntire, a summary of the conference and the directives will be sent to ABME for consideration as a review article.
